Why AppenninOpenAir?

The AppenninOpenAir Project was designed in 2023. As often happens, it was sparked by a call issued by the Italian Ministry of Tourism.

So, the project team gathered the needs of the inhabitants, and took a snapshot to understand the context and what is missing.

"We gathered the projects awaiting funding, those in progress, and we unleashed some dreams from the drawer. We extended our gaze to what is happening in the Bolognese Apennines and its valleys: alliances and partnerships between municipalities, businesses, and the third sector; a renewed passion for hiking and cycling; the technological embrace that simplifies and connects. Above all, we met a bold community, eager to build its own future."

What is AppenninOpenAir?

To give an economic boost under the sign of social cohesion and regeneration, AppenninOpenAir was born. It is many things at once:

  • A project on sustainable outdoor tourism
  • An entrepreneurial opportunity and a local economy engine
  • A regeneration design of public spaces and buildings
  • A social and technological innovation path
  • A living lab involving residents, public administrations, schools, universities, businesses, and the third sector
  • A beautiful story to tell

What will AppenninOpenAir do?

AppenninOpenAir: Outdoor Tourism for All aims to create an integrated and innovative ecosystem, involving operators, businesses, public administration, residents of the Apennines, educational institutions, schools, and universities in the Emilia-Romagna region. At the same time, it seeks to implement digital services (mobility, accessibility), structures, and infrastructures (urban regeneration) for outdoor, sports, nature-based, and zero-carbon tourism (smart tourism destination). Material Activities

AppenninOpenAir carries out significant structural adaptations of 3 buildings, to allocate them to tourism services and activities:
Ca’ del Costa (Municipality of Monghidoro)
Il Camping La Martina, within the "Parco La Martina" (Municipality of Monghidoro)
Palazzo Ranuzzi's guesthouse (Municipality of San Benedetto Val di Sambro)

Immaterial Activities

To engage residents and tourism operators, the project team organizes a social innovation path, a capacity building roadmap and a community organizing framework. Additionally, we also want to bring the academic, school, and research world to the mountains with an International School, where residents can exchange experiences and knowledge with students, teachers, professionals, and experts.

Cross-cutting Activities
The project will be supported by an intense communication plan with events and initiatives, composing a widespread AppenninOpenAir Festival.

AppenninOpenAir is co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Tourism, under the Fund for the enhancement of municipalities with a population of less than 5,000 inhabitants with a tourist vocation, as provided for in Article 1, paragraph 607 of Law No. 197 of December 29, 2022. Beneficiaries are the Municipalities of Monghidoro (lead partner) and San Benedetto Val di Sambro in the Emilia-Romagna region, Italy.
